Welcome to Live Array!
August, 2004
Dear Members of the ICMA,
I have just assumed the role of ICMA President as of June, 2004. I
will begin by saying that I am genuinely enthusiastic about the
future of computer music, and the role of the ICMA organization and
the ICMC conferences in that future. I have been going to ICMCs and
many other related conferences since the late 1980's, witnessing the
incredible growth of our field in that time. I have served on the
ICMA board for many years, most recently as Vice President for
Membership. I am honored to take on this new role, and promise that I
will do all I can to work with the ICMA board and membership to
ensure that the organization and our field continues to grow and
prosper.
We have seen some difficult times in the last few years, with the
events of September 11 and the SARS epidemic occurring just before
two of the last three ICMC conferences. Due to the diligence of
outgoing ICMA President Mary Simoni, and the efforts of the board,
ICMC organizers, and ICMC membership, we weathered these times, and
experienced strong conferences in spite of the difficulties. In
looking forward, we must look back to thank Mary Simoni for
accomplishing her main goals during her tenure as ICMA President,
most notably putting the ICMA on a firm financial footing. This year
we were even able to place a small amount of money in an
earnings-generating account, with the intention of eventually turning
that into an ICMA endowment.
If you take a look at the new and continuing ICMA Board members
and officers, you'll notice that the world is well represented. Since
the creation of the new Vice Presidents, Directors, and at-large
member positions, we have filled those positions with worthy
representatives from around the world.
Our Regional Vice Presidents (Asia/Oceania: Ho Chee Kong
(Singapore), Americas: Gary Scavone (Canada), Europe: Leigh Landy
(UK)) are charged with fostering activity and recruiting new members
in their designated areas. Together with the elected Regional
Directors (Europe: Leigh Landy (UK) and Hans Timmermans (Netherlands)
Americas: Andrew May and Bonnie Miksch, Asia/Oceania: Naotoshi Osaka
(Japan) and Ho Chee Kong (Singapore), the regions can undertake
specific activities and promote the ICMA in a more direct way in
different parts of the world.
Bonnie Miksch is our new Vice-President for membership,
shepherding the membership and cultivating new individual and
corporate members.
Our Vice President for Conferences, Mara Helmuth, will work to
ensure that future conferences run smoothly and successfully. This
includes developing relationships with potential future ICMC hosts,
and administering contracts and logistics with current ICMC hosts.
Arrangements and plans for the upcoming ICMC conference in Miami, and
the year after in Barcelona are proceeding wonderfully, and we all
look forward to convening in those two beautiful cities this and next
fall.
Christopher Penrose will now serve as Research Director,
supervising the ICMC Best Paper and Best Presentation Awards,
overseeing the preparation and publication of the ICMC Proceedings,
and looking for opportunities to expand the support and quality of
computer music research throughout the world.
Michael Alcorn is our Music Coordinator, with duties including
oversight of the music program of the ICMC, and the ICMA commissions
process.
Our ICMA publications, including Array and www.computermusic.org
online, are supervised by John Young (Publications) and Margaret
Schedel (Array Editor). Andrew May is our new secretary and
treasurer. Other board members include at-large director Ian Whalley
(New Zealand).
My goals as President of ICMA are actually quite simple:
* To grow the organization in both artistic and
scientific aspects.
* To present solid and successful ICMC conferences.
* To reach out to allied areas and conferences for possible
joint opportunities.
* To work with the ICMA board and membership to provide useful
services and benefits for our membership, and the Computer Music
community at large.
Let's all work to make ICMA the organization we would like it to
be.
